The Chinese Martial Arts Wushu or
better known as kung fu came to Sri Lanka in early 1980s.
It was not proper or correct styles of Chinese Wushu. But
in 1987, the cultural secretary of the Chinese embassy in
Colombo, Mr Yu Gnodi introduced Laoshi, Dr. Yan Jin Lin
to Sri Lankan Wushu pioneers Mr. Manel Dharmakeerthi and
Mr N. Edirisinghe. That was the year true Chinese Martial
Arts Wushu were properly introduced to Sri Lanka.In
year 1989 Wushu was registered as Sri Lanka's 44th National
sport with the Ministry of Sport s.In
1993, Wushu federation of Sri Lankas(WFSL) was formed and
Mr Manel Dharmakeerthi became its founder Secretary General.
In year 1994, the first ever Sri Lankan national Wushu championship
was held.
Wushu Federation of Sri Lanka was
registered with the Ministry of Sports of Youth Affairs
as the sole government controlity body for Wushu in 1997
under the president ship of Mr. Manel Dharmakeerthi
In year 2000, the ministry of sports of
youth affairs dissolved the WFSL due to the malpractices
& violation of the State law of the country by some
senior members of WFSL.
Then minter of Sports appointed Hon. T.B.
Ekenayake as he president and Mr. Manel Dharmakeerthi as
the secretary of the interim committee for wushu to run
the affairs of Wushu Federation Of Sri Lanka.Then came the
golden era of wushu in Sri Lanaka , under the leadership
of Hon. T.B. Ekenayake ,Sri Lanka became the champion of
2nd South Asian Wushu Championship in New Delhi, India in
2003.Wushu was introduced to 10th South Asian Games in 2006
Colombo ,Sri Lanka became the joint South Asian Champions
by winning 04 golds ,02 silvers and 04 bronze medals at
the SAG.
Today in Wushu, Sri Lanka has won many
South Asian, Asian & World medels, and wining is stil
continueing.
